when you use them, if you dont want to get into any trouble/debt with it make sure you use it as you would a debt card. when you use the credit card you are essentially TAKING OUT A LOAN. if you pay back the money by your bill’s due date, interest will not be applied to it. otherwise, interest will be applied to whatever amount you have left to pay.

however, credit cards can be a useful tool. they help you build credit…. but make sure you at least pay your minimum payment each month, otherwise your credit score will go down. if you get a card with rewards… you also get rewards. for instance, i get cash rewards on one of my cards, and have earned $50 this year. on another card, i have $200 credit that i can apply to a plane ticket if i buy it with that card.

if you feel that you can use the card like it is a check/debit card (ie, you dont spend more than you have, so you can pay your balance off each month), then pick some cards based on rewards you would like, and from there pick one with the best interest rate. otherwise, first pick cards based on their interest rate, then rewards.

    Are you 18 or older?
18 is the legal age you can get one without somebody else also being on the account.
If used with moderation, credit cards are not any more expensive than cash (get one with NO annual fee), and you don’t carry a balance over each month – meaning pay it off in the FULL amount EACH month – and there isn’t any interest added on.

The problem is that a lot of people don’t have the self control to not buy a lot of stuff then can’t afford to pay the full amount, and are stuck with interest payments every month.

It’s hard – I know, I used to be one of those “minimum payment” kind of people. But since I learned better, it is really easier than carrying cash or checks.

And like the previous answer said, it builds your credit rating (PROVIDED you don’t miss any payments, etc.)
