If you have a VISA card you can use it at banks and foreign exchange offices and even at some ATM’s. I live overseas and use my debit card with VISA logo to get cash every month.
Big NO to the Amex unless you are booking online. Visa and MC are your best bets.
Make sure your limit is pretty high. It’s alot cheaper – I know this sounds crazy – to use your credit cards. They have a much better exchange rate than any ATM card or bank. I was charged 5 dollars an ATM transaction, plus a % fee for conversion rate to use my Visa bank card with Wells Fargo. Fortunately, I only did this twice, and of course it was in the Czech Republic and London. I had to pick the two most expensive places!
If you pay your CC off at the end of each month you won’t get hit with interest. This was the best solution for me.
It’s a really smart idea to bring travelers checks in case of emergency – but don’t bring too much. I brought $1500 and I ended up not needing to use any of it. However a few friends of mine had some money issues while abroad, wallets being stolen, bank problems, etc… so the extra cash would have helped them.
I don’t have a discover card, so I didn’t look into this – but AMEX was generally not accepted.
Most are accepted, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Diners Club, etc.
Visa in most places, some take mastercard, not Discover or American Express.

Visa is the Best and the only.
Pretty much everything including your atm card.

most of the credit cards work over there
Mastercard or VISA are your all-round safe bets, AMEX is not a good choice in Europe, particularly in the UK.
Simple as that.
Also, it would be helpful to know your PIN number as you’ll need this to pay for things in shops etc and to withdraw money if need be.
As they say , ‘ Don’t enter a foreign country without a VISA.’ It is true. VISA is the Best
The best are the chip and pin variety, but most work everywhere.
