I’ve heard both… my teacher said having a lot of credit cards will lower my score. But I also read that part of your credit score is based on the formula

how much you owe/ total credit , so in that case having more cards would be better. I have 7 cards and I only use 2 of them. Should I cancel my other cards?

I am wondering if you have like 10 credit cards with little or no balances will hurt you credit score? Meaning…debt ratio wise…do they go by the amount of credit you were given in order to access the debt ratio…or the amount of credit you actually have used? Meaning..if you have 10 cards with little or no balances…that doesn’t really bring your FICO score down does it?

Lot of banks are issuing free credit cards. How do these banks make profit by giving free credit cards. If we purchase something in credit card, the bank has to pay the money to the vendors and we will pay it only after say, 45 days. The bank will lose the interest for this 45 days. So how does it work?

Old bills causing poor credit, what to do?

So for five years or so I was really broke and I’ve accumulated a lot of small old bills. Nothing really big, $100 here, $300 there, all told it’s under $5000, which I realize is not much compared to folks that have a ton of credit card debt, of which I have none.

I have a good job now and I’m able to cover all of my living expenses, but I can’t generate any extra money to take care of these little bills all over. I don’t want to declare bankruptcy, but I really want to improve my credit rating and find some way of dealing with these bills. Are there any services out there to help a person in my situation? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Can I cancel my credit cards before the balance is paid off?

Hi,
I just got out of graduate school and have a lot of credit card debt on several cards. A few have decent interest rates. It would be great to cancel all but a few and keep paying them off. I don’t want to be tempted to use them in the future. Is this possible, or am I only allowed to cancel once the balance is paid off?
